Dereham Memorial Hall, where most of our productions are performed

Dereham Theatre Company (formerly Dereham Operatic Society) is a charitable Trust and was formed in 1948 to offer the local community education and enlightenment in amateur dramatic arts. A very grand way of saying that we were formed to entertain the people of Dereham and Norfolk!

Our Shakespearian motto "Mere folk who give distraction are we" comes from Cole Porter's musical "Kiss Me Kate", which we first performed in 1970, and is based upon one of William Shakespeare's most famous plays "The Taming of the Shrew".

We stage three productions a year (not including the productions of our youth group) including a major musical in the autumn, a pantomime over the Christmas period and a play in the spring.  There is something for everyone!

If you are looking to join one of the premier operatic and dramatic societies in Norfolk as either a performer (we actively encourage all whatever your ability or experience, whether you are a singer, an actor, dancer, or just enjoy being on stage), backstage helper, front of house staff or just looking to purchase some tickets for our next show ........ you need look no further; Welcome to our website.

With so many male roles to fill young men are particularly sought after!  However, everyone is always welcome to audition for our productions.  Performing three shows annually, our plays, musicals and pantomimes cater for those who love singing, dancing and straight acting.  If you are under 19 on September 1st you are eligible to join our youth company DOSYTCo, which presents its own musical and concert each year.

Information on DOSYTCo can be found here.

We encourage proposals from those with directorial experience and new ideas will always be considered. We work with both professional and amateur directors to stage full-scale productions of the highest quality. Those new to directing will also be considered, but some past experience as an Assistant Director at least would be essential.

Musical Directors/Choreographers

Collaborating with experienced and versatile MDs and Choreographers has led to the success of our yearly musical and NODA award-winning pantomime productions. Applications from interested parties are always welcome.

Stage/Technical Crew

Working with an experienced stage crew team, assistance is always needed backstage.  These roles are particularly suited to those capable of lifting/moving scenery as well as working under the pressure of a live performance!  The roles vary from show to show, but there's always plenty to do.

Support Crew

During show week, helpers are always needed to work with the costume, props, make-up and hair teams. Our Support Crew is essential for a smooth operation to help with all manner of tasks.

Front of House Team

Our front of house and bar team are always in need of support from existing Members.  Duties for FOH include working with the box office, selling  programmes and ushering.  These roles are the most flexible and suitable for members with a limited amount of time to give.
